Autism Fitness Founder
Eric Chessen, M.S.
Hundreds of Neurodivergent Athletes. Two Decades. One Method.
I walked into my high school weight room knowing only that I wanted to make a change. Since then, strength and fitness have been a cornerstone of my personal and professional life.
In 2002, early into my career as a personal trainer and attending graduate classes in behavior science, I was invited to work with an extraordinary educational program for teens with ASD. I was mentored by a wonderful team of behavior therapists, speech therapists, and educators.
Seeking a best practices approach for fitness programming with neurodivergent I found...practically nothing. And nothing practical. So it became my mission to provide effective, meaningful fitness programming... and the start of Autism Fitness.
Spending nearly a decade working with individuals spanning from children to geriatrics, and ranging remarkably in physical, behavioral, and cognitive profiles, I began the groundwork of developing the PAC Profile, an interdisciplinary model for assessing and programming. In 2017 I launched the Autism Fitness Pro Certification, which now has nearly 700 Certified Pros (and parents) worldwide.
It simply isn't enough to just have a "movement program" or "exercises for" the autism and neurodivergent population. Successful outcomes require a comprehensive approach that includes effective exercise selection, coaching, and communication. Autism Fitness programming and education provides the framework for developing and implementing programs that have clearly defined and measurable outcomes; building strength and motor skills that generalize to activities of daily living.
Today, the mission of Autism Fitness continues to promote fitness as a life skill, not a secondary leisure activity. Prioritizing fitness, specifically strength training, can enhance physical, emotional, and cognitive health, having a significant role in quality of life.
We maintain and promote a best practices approach based on the most up-to-date, valid, and real-world proven strategies in exercise science, positive behavior support, and coaching.
All of this combined represents the Autism Fitness "Movement for Movement," and our commitment of bringing meaningful, effective fitness programs to the ASD and neurodivergent population around the world through the Autism Fitness Certification and consulting.
If you're ready to join the Movement for Movement, we're here to educate and support you through your journey.
